Why Internships
One of the biggest challenges of learners who have already obtained a qualification in South Africa currently is to equip them with the practical skills needed in the workplace. The Services SETA needs to comply with the NSDS Target and have engaged in a process of introducing Internships for candidates who have already completed a degree, diploma or any other national qualification but has not yet gathered the necessary practical experience to be able to be ready for the workplace.
What is Internship/ In-service Training/Experiential Learning?
An Internship is an opportunity to provide a student and/or graduate with work-based training to gain the knowledge, skills and workplace experience which is still lacking.
Who qualifies for internship placement?
- Unemployed South African graduates from higher education institutions i.e. university and/or university of technology who have completed their degree or diploma.
- Unemployed graduates who have not been exposed to work experience related to the area of study that was completed.
- Young people who are currently studying at a higher education institution and are required to complete a period of Internship in order to complete the requirements of the qualification for which they are studying.
Benefits for Interns
During a Internship placement, the student will be entitled to:
- Internship placement for (6) six months.
- On-the-job mentoring and coaching in work-related unit.
- A support structure for interns during internship period.
- Developmental opportunities in career and personal development.
- Monthly Allowance of R 18 000 (R 3 000 per month for 6 months).
- Employers will be allowed to top this amount up if they so wish, but this is not compulsory.
- Leave entitlements.
- A SSETA Certificate of Practical Workplace Experience will be issued which endorses or augments the HET or FET qualification which the learner already has.
- Possible Retainment – the company will at the end of the 6 month period retain at least 70 % of the Interns on a permanent basis for at least another 6 months.
Period of internship
The Services SETA invites Companies to accommodate interns for a period of 6 months.
To apply for possible placement,applicants must submit the following:
- Completed Internship Application.
- Completed Employment Contract.
- Completed Bank Account Details Form.
- Comprehensive curriculum vitae.
- Certified copy of Identity document.
- Certified copy of qualification/s.
